Effective Ways to Remove PFAS from Drinking Water

October 23, 2024

Water is essential for life. Pure water is necessary for a healthy life. That's why when a recent study showed that nearly half of the water coming out of the tap in US households has been contaminated with PFAS, people started paying attention. In fact, water testing is a requirement in many states and municipalities to ensure that EPA levels are met.

So then, what is the problem? The EPA standards, in the opinion of some, are way too low. The other problem is that this testing is sometimes only done in larger cities, and those getting their water from wells are not required to test at all.

At S & L Water Solutions, we offer solutions for PFAS contamination with our water filtration systems. Our expert technicians can help test your water and recommend the system that is right for you and your family.

What is PFAS?

PFAS is the acronym for per and poly-fluoroalkyl substances, a family of artificial chemicals developed for their water and stain-resistant qualities. These chemicals were used in fire-fighting foam, stain-resistant carpet, and non-stick cookware. They are called forever chemicals because they remain in the environment and the human body for long periods. They enter our bodies through drinking water, so by filtering these chemicals from our water, they can prevent them from building up.

PFAS contamination can be found, often at Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs) in many areas around Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania. These dangerous contaminants are entering our environment through the soil, surface water, groundwater, and even the seafood that we eat. The health and safety of the water we drink have a direct correlation to various health conditions.

Do Water Filters remove PFAS?

With the right filtration system, PFAS contaminants can be removed from your water. Generally, the best types of filters for removing PFAS are reverse osmosis and activated carbon-based filters. S & L Water offers the following types:

Reverse Osmosis Membranes

Reverse Osmosis systems work by allowing only molecules the size of water or smaller to pass through a semi-permeable membrane. They usually combine a sediment filter with an activated charcoal filter to make the most out of the filtration process. They are usually set up to remove nitrate and arsenic as well.

Ion Exchange Resin Systems

Ion exchange systems work to soften the water by using electronically charged solids to remove contaminant ions from the water. They exchange the contaminants with either sodium or chloride, depending on the system.

Granulated Activated Carbon

This system works by the activated carbon attaching itself to the contaminants to remove them from water. These systems can remove other contaminants as well as some compounds that affect taste and odor.

Why Does PFAS Need to be Filtered?

PFAS have been linked to a wide range of health problems that affect the immune system, reproductive organs, and other body functions. Some issues that have been detected include:

  • Thyroid functions
  • Liver disease
  • Birth defects
  • Cancer of the kidney, pancreatic, reproductive
  • Lipid and Insulin dysregulation
  • Kidney disease
  • Hypertension
  • Elevated cholesterol levels
  • Infant with low birth weight
